Of Mice And Men Review.

Of Mice and Men is an outstanding, and well-written novel. I highly recommend it. The book has many ways I would highlight it to my liking, but I love the book due to the characters, their roles, the plot, and the meaning of the book, and the lessons it teaches the readers. Of mice and men is a compelling story which two men, one of great size, and the other smart, and quick, form a bond a bond as they travel together and pursue a dream of theirs.

First, the characters in the book make up a great novel also fit into the storyline, and plot well. Some characters represent different, all-around symbols, whether they are abstract on concrete. For example, I can label Curly’s wife as Eve in the Garden of Eden, because Lenny represents Adam, whom is attracted to the sin of touching, and conversing, with Curly’s wife. When Adam defines God, and bite into the apple, is similar to when Lenny touches, and caresses Curly’s wife’s hair. He defines George’s rule, as Adam disobeyed God. His move caused a major mishap that would affect everyone.

Second, the plot of the story Of Mice and Men is great, and exactly the type of book I would enjoy reading, and would love for it to continue into a movie. The plot involved arguments, violence, and even gun. It was just a great novel, overall, which will be discussed, in the next paragraph. Reason for myself favoring the plot due to the realist values such as the mental disability of Lenny, and the coward ness of Curly. Every other book doesn’t include any character that has a mental disability that you will come to like, but this disable character fits into the story, and completes the story. Finally, another reason I like the plot, because it involve everyday issue that are still dealt with today, such as the jealousy Curly has towards his wife’s social encounters with the other men in the book.

Finally, the meaning, and the overall purpose can be interpreted into many meanings. Religion is one of the main topics in which this book can be translated, and compared to. There are many symbols in this book that can relate to religion. For example, the spot where Lenny goes after he commits the crime, that spot can be compared to a confessional, or the place where the 12 disciples hid, where they had the last supper, until Jesus Christ returned to them. This can be as reason, but as a personal opinion, and a theory, I stand behind it, not intended to commit controversy.

In conclusion, this book was a great novel overall. I feel as though this book displays great meaning, and value within the pages. Again, I recommend the book, and also the movie, which was made. I prefer the latest addition, but both are good to view just to have said” I’ve seen” category, but hats off to John Steinbeck

Essay Question: Beyond The Line!!!!!!!

Q) WHICH CHARACTER IN THE ENTIRE NOVEL CAN YOU RELATE YOUR-SELF BEST TO, AND WHY??

A) Characters in the book Of Mice and Men, has so many features, and traits that each character can be related to someone in some type of way. The characters in the novel carry but every category, but also have some flaws like some humans. Traits such as greed, cocky, nice, smart, and even physical size is covered in this book. I can relate my self to one various characters, but I feel as though I resemble is George, due to smarts, calm maturity, and protector of close friends.

First, smarts is a trait that every character in the book lack, and doesn't have. I feel as though I have plenty of smart, but i tend to slack off, and procrastinate. George also has the smarts, and is able to get out of certain situations in a certain period of time. George is one of the main characters that is able to take over a lead, and figure out good plans to reach his success. I can take on multiple, and can think over situations and also get out of bad situation in a fair period of time.

Second, the maturity of George, is cool, and settled at all times. George, never loses his cool on this book, unless he is put into a bad position. George is also a great protector of his close friends. When Lenny get into trouble, he keeps his cool, but at the same time fends, and stick up for his friend. George keeps a tight circle, and has a good friend, but at times he loses his cool, when Lenny get into a altercation.

Third, George and myself, give each other good expectation, because we also look out, and protect our close friends. I stand, and take up for my friend when they need assistance in their troubling situation. I will provide, and help my friends, and I'm sure they will assist me in some of my times of hard-ship.

In conclusion, I think Of Mice and Men is a great novel. Every great writer, reader or critic should own a copy. I loved this book, and loved the movie. This book teaches a great lesson, and I hope you'll pick the book up.

English Exam Questions (Between the Lines)

Q: 1) In detail, Describe the traits, and the way the "spot near the river" represents, can relate to a religious symbol.
A: Due to the river, the spot near the water can represent some sort of baptismal service, right after Lenny commits a sin. He goes to the spot to cleanses himself, and the waiting of George, who can represent Jesus in this case.

Q: 2)Did you think Curly gave his wife the respect, and valued his time with her?
A: No, due to the fact when she was murdered, he showed no sympathy, and no remorse within the time he should have valued her. Curly showed her no respect, and i think that he was very over-protective, due to her social life around the rest of the cast, and men on the farm.

Q: 3)Do you see George being a father-figure to Lenny, therefore the physical difference?
A: Yeah, George has the smarts, and Lenny has the physical attributes. This story can relate to a novel called "Freak the Mighty", because it has two characters similar, but the characters have a big age difference but the stories are similar.

Q: 4)Does Curl's Wife seem miserable through-out the book?
A: Yes, she needs attention and someone to converse with. She seem like a nice girl, but she plays a trouble maker type, due to the ego, and probably insecurity of himself of finding another woman.

Q: 5)Is Lenny scared of George?
A: No, I think Lenny take George in as family, he would never want to hurt him or put him in that type of situation. Vice-Versa.

Civil Essay

Darrin Mills March 17, 2009
Constitution HS American History

The Civil War: Effect on a Nation

The Civil War can be described as one of the most brutal, and devastating wars in history, but resulted in shaping, and forming this great nation, and it’s history. The civil war changed the life and affected the way African Americans were valued, also the civil war also had great effects on solders, and regular citizens as well, from emotions to physical results. From the Anaconda Plan to the March to Sea, citizens and the government divided the nations into two parts, which had slight different view on the ways of the country.

The main cause of the civil war was over a dispute about whether the entire country as far as land, should become slave free, or slave owned, also taxation of the of cotton exports. I believe that the slaves were the main source of the country’s economy along with the confederates, but also I am pleading with the union, because the disagreement between the two parties were going to lead to a battle of their beliefs, and you cannot have a country running on one government, and have a border line between a major law, parting and splitting land in half. So the two parties would have to settle this dispute by war, and only war. The union along with Abraham Lincoln, tried various time to hold the country together, but his effort had very little effect on their perspectives. On December 20, 1860, South Carolina secedes from the Union.

Over the next several weeks, six more states pulled out of the union as well. Together all of the states formed the Confederates States of America, with Jefferson Davis as their president, and leader. The move was unconstitutional, and he stated that he had no legal right to interfere with the slavery in the states where it existed, but he expressed his right to keep the union together.

On April 12, 1861, the southern forces had opened fire on Fort Sumter, a fort near Charleston harbour. This had put fury in the north’s leaders. On April 13th, Fort Sumter, surrendered to Southern forces. Before a week later, On April 19th, the 6th Massachusetts regiment was attacked by a Baltimore Mob, and this force President Lincoln to declare a blockade boarder, and separating the southern coast.

By this time there could be no compromise, and that sparked and started the war. The civil war has certain arguments such as was it inevitable. On July 21 1861, the Battle of the First Bull Run was fought in Virginia, and nearly a month flowing, on August 10th, 1861, the Battle of Wilson Creek was fought, where General Nathaniel Lyon was encamped by the, and died.

By this Slavery still was at it’s peak, when the northern states abandoned the institution, and flourished the south’s economy, knowing very little that this move will cause the two separate area’s to cause conflict, and confrontation over land, and right involving the slaves. In the years prior to the civil war almost all the sections had conflict over the rights of the slave. This began with the debate over the three-fifth clause at the Constitutional Convention of 1787, and continued with the compromise of 1820, the Nullification Crisis, the anti-slavery Gag rule, and the Compromise of 1850.

The Civil War had an atrocious effect on the soldiers and their families, also to the economy of the United States. But this caused loved ones home, also soldiers to forward each other’s various letters, and telegrams wishes, and experiences from the war. Letters were passed on to some, but unfortunately majority of the solders would never return, due to the excessive battles all over the confederate territory, or land. But on January 1 1863, Abraham Lincoln, made one of the most drastic moves in history, by issuing The Emancipation Proclamation. .

This moved caused the Slaves to be released and become free from their slave owner. The slaves were filled with rejoice, but weren’t free due to the rebellion states attitude, and perspective on this new document. Later on this was not a good move on the Southerner’s part. By freeing their slaves, the cotton production levels would soon decrease and worsen the economy for the confederates. Due this loss, the country’s economy took a harsh blow due to the release of slave, because they were used for most of the south’s labour, and breeding to produce more slaves for the master’s work, house, and plantation.

Also the North and South both suffered from their loses of the imports and export from many states were halted since materials, minerals, other useful sources and objects were used for the war and they were fighting each other. Abraham Lincoln prohibited England from interfering with the dispute between the two territories.

Suddenly, on April 9, 1865, Gen. Robert E. Lee surrenders his Confederate Army to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the village of Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Grant allows Rebel officers to keep their side arms and permits soldiers to keep horses and mules. Four years into the war the union suffered a devastating blow, when Lincoln was assassinated on April 15th 1865, by a rifle bullet shot by John Wilkes Booth, while viewing a screen play, or movie, approximately 7:00am.

Over the next three-month many of the Confederate’s leaders surrendered in Virginia, when but it wasn’t until the next day, that President Lincoln passed. General Johnston surrendered, in North Carolina. In May, remaining Confederate forces surrender. The Nation is reunited as the Civil War ends.

Over 620,000 Americans died in the war, with disease killing twice as many as those lost in battle. 50,000 survivors return home as amputees, and heroes. This was the last event to happen, which sealed the war, with a win to the union, and a drastic loss to the confederates.

››On Dec 6, 1865, The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, is finally ratified. Slavery is abolished. This war is considered to be one of the most brutal wars compared to the infamous WWI, and WWI.

My MaturitiySeason essay

“ My Maturity Season”

“ Have you ever thought about when it time to give up your childish ways”, recently I have taken serious thought about how am I going to mature, and most importantly, deciding what season I’m in. I have three different perspectives I give myself, and where I am as far as growing up, and the transformation into adulthood. My definition of spring in this case is that, playful, jokester, and the immature 15 years old. My perspective on my transition, is well “on-schedule”, due to the recent passing of my 16th birthday, I feels as though I have made a drastic change into maturity, as well as age wise. The summer is really my future plans, and how I am preparing for my following seasons.

My perspective on becoming a teenage is that you should leave your “immature baggage” behind, and start with a new positive looks on life. I believe that I show signs of which you can call “ buds” forming in the sprig time, ready for blooming, when I ignore child’s play, and handle my current business like an adult. I fall back into my immature ways, when I am influenced by friends, and fellow jokesters, but when I grow in age each year, I feels as though it triggers a perspective in my brain, that says, and repeats “Grow Up”. That saying gives me modem, and guides me to strive for the term “mature”

Next, my transition is my current status for the moment. I am currently at this particular stage because I am feeling the urge of becoming older with my birthday approaching. With that said, my upcoming goals are along with my accomplishments of reaching the age 16, I have officially set a few requirement for myself to reach the label of “transition”. I have good insight of my future, and I believe I am ready to cross into my summer. Some of these requirements are obtaining my drivers permit, receive a job, and maintain a good social life.

Finally, my summer best complete the comparison of my home life, also life outside of my home. This determines my life and persona leaning towards “grownup-ism”. I take on this role for my younger siblings, or when I am making future decisions. This part of my season(s) can relate but can also vary to my transition, because once I complete my goals, then I will have past my spring.

In conclusion, I seek more interest in my summer, than my spring. My summer gives me a little taste of my future adult life. This experience can help me through my life and prepare me for my future adulthood, also my remaining and upcoming seasons.

S.O.S. by Amiri Baraka

Darrin Mills February 12, 2009
Constitution HS English II

S.O.S by: Amiri Baraka

“Calling All Black People”, what can these words mean? Can these words symbolize a calling, or a call of interest towards a nationality? Myself, the reader assumes this poem, relates to time, of activist, civil rights, and the author may have a strong point to get across by telling, this poem. When the reader cites this poem over, he/she may think about vast times of rebellion. This poem catches my eye due to the vocabulary, the meaning, and the vast connection it makes to my activist side of my personality.

The vocabulary of the poem S.O.S. caught my attention, due to the virtues and characteristics meant by the used words. The reader feels as though the author had a serious crave for the repetition of the entire poem. The words that the author used where also very basic, and simple. The poet gives off an activist vibe, showed by the repeat of “Calling All Black People”. This poem shows a strong sense of unity in the African American community.

The meaning to this poem is very deep, and inspirational, because of the race choice, it revolves around one nationality, and drives us to unite. Just by looking at the poem, you can feed off of the activist type of vibe, which the poet is speaking on. When I recite this poem, it makes me think of the movie, “Dead Presidents”, due to the fact Lorenzo Tate’s close friend was an uptight, and serious activist. This poem makes me feel a sign of protest, and standing up for one’s actions, and rights.

This poem is so cool, but this poem does have a bit of a downfall about it. This poem tends to get pretty boring, and begin to die down at the end. It repeats its words, has a meaning, unites, and inspires, but doesn’t switch up the flow of the poem through the whole poem.

In conclusion, this poem, in a way ignites us as a people, and brings unity to the African American community. This gives insight of how Blacks were called together, by shouting in acts of activism. This poem can inspires many culture, by it unique efforts of unity.

Malcolm X: This historical figure represents a thug, gangster, but importantly, he can also represent, a family man, achiever, international speaker, icon, motivator, also a speaker for black nationalism. Malcolm X has had an effect on history itself, and other national issues, in the world. Even though, Malcolm X had a troubled life style at an early age, and many people against his beliefs, he became mature as an adult, and had gotten involved, in many civil rights organizations, also contributing to this nation’s history, by becoming an international speaker of th Nation Of Islam, and later on becoming a figure in many lives.

Malcolm X, born in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 29, 1925, before his historical effect on the nation, he lived a troubled, life by the age of 20, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison on a burglary charge. While in prison, Malcolm, was introduced to the Nation Of Islam, and the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, by converting to black muslim religion while serving time in prison. After his release, Malcolm traveled to Chicago, where he began to study under the teachings, and action of Elijah Muhammad, and became a nation speaker, for the organization. As years went past, Malcolm X rose quickly in the ranks, serving as minister of Harlem’s Temple No. 7, in 1954, and later ministering in temples in Detroit, Michigan, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Malcolm X, during his span with the organization, he had put forward major effort forwards the Civil Rights Movement, involving Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to help, also to over-send the wrong message, almost battling between the two movements. Malcolm had a certain outlook, on the series of events, or problem going on at the time, rather than Dr. King. Malcolm rejected such compromises, as Black Muslim. He argued with fellow activist, by making vast quotes, and arguments toward positive African American activist, and Presidents, such as Presidents John F Kennedy. Along with the Nation Of Islam, Malcolm heavily promoted Black Nationalism, which belief of separation between whites, and blacks, through physical, emotional, and politically. During this time, Malcolm also rejected the non-violence act promoting violence, along with the beliefs of Stokley Carmichael, the founder of the Black Panther Part, which has theory, and a theme of a Black Militant Group.

Malcolm, with the Nation Of Islam did various supporting acts, to help the organization to gain coverage, and supporters. He gave speeches, and made appearances at special events such as the White House. He began to travel, and while did, he had a change of heart, and began to have a diffrent perspective, on certain issues. The Nation Of Islam figured, that Malcolm would exploit them, he became a factor against them, and became cautious of his actions. They later kicked him off, and he departed from their affiliations. Later, Malcolm actually developed, and founded his own organization. He began to receive national attention, and give more speeches.

Upon his release in 1952 he renamed himself Malcolm X, symbolically repudiating the "white man's name."As a devoted follower of Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X rose quickly within the NOI ranks, serving as minister of Harlem's Temple No. 7 in 1954, and later ministering to temples in Detroit and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Through national speaking engagements, television appearances, and by establishing Muhammad Speaks—the NOI's first nationally distributed newspaper—Malcolm X put the Nation of Islam on the map. His sharp criticisms of civil rights leaders for advocating integration into white society instead of building black institutions and defending themselves from racist violence generated opposition from both conservatives and liberals. His opponents called him "violent," "fascist," and "racist." To those who claimed that the NOI undermined their efforts toward integration by preaching racial separatism, Malcolm X responded, "It is not integration that Negroes in America want, it is human dignity."
